‘City of Manaus Literary Awards’ has new law approved

The new Law 2.960, of 10/5/22, changed the previous one, unifying the categories that were divided between regional and national

The launch of the 2023 edition will take place in the second half of February. The awards are nationwide and organized by the Municipal Council of Culture (Concultura), with support from the Municipal Foundation for Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult). The contest aims to reward, annually, unpublished works by Brazilian authors domiciled or not in Brazil.

For the director-president of Manauscult, the management of Mayor David Almeida innovates once again, unifying the value of the prizes at R$ 8 thousand, and the publication of the winning works, giving even more visibility to the artists’ books.

“Our goal is to launch this national call for bids by February and encourage the field of literature. These changes have led Amazonian writers to enroll more and more in the public notice and to win the most disputed categories”, he points out.

The president of Concultura, Tenório Telles, clarifies that the reformulation of the “Cidade de Manaus Literary Awards” will add value to the contest, making it more attractive due to the value of the prize and the publication of the works.

“The contest is one of the most outstanding in the country and, in addition to helping to stimulate literary talent, it promotes and inserts the city of Manaus in the national literary calendar”, says Telles. He points out that the changes in the law were the result of consultations made and endorsed by the counselors.

The new Law 2.960, of 10/5/22, changed the previous one, unifying the categories that were divided between regional and national, now in ten: Álvaro Maia prize (novel or telenovela), Arthur Engrácio prize (short stories), Péricles prize Moraes (chronicles), Violeta Branca Menescal prize (poetry), Samuel Benchimol prize (essay), Áureo Nonato prize (memory and literary journalism), Alfredo Fernandes prize (children’s literature), Álvaro Braga prize (drama book), Mário Ypiranga prize Monteiro (essay on popular traditions) and the Djalma Batista award (Amazon theme).
