Children’s book explores the historic center of São Paulo – 03/10/2023 – Maternar

A few years ago, when she walked home from school with her daughter, architect and urban planner Sabrina Fontenele used a trick to distract the girl. She invited Lina, now 14, to count the roots of trees that broke the sidewalks, see water flowing along the path, observe the iron gate painted blue or the tiles of a house and its colorful facade. The six blocks went by quickly.

With that, Fontenele also taught the girl to explore more attentively a region that would go unnoticed by the daily walk of six blocks.

Years later, the experience with his daughter and the desire to make people fall in love with the city led to the book “O Jacaré Fujão no Triângulo” (Cultural Acácia). In it, Sabrina recounts the adventure of a reptile that circulates through the Triangle, a section of the center of São Paulo where the main historic buildings of the city are located, such as Largo São Bento, Pateo do Collegio and Largo São Francisco.

Jacaré Fujão has the help of a cat and a dove to discover the region, and throughout history, mentions sounds, smells, colors and lights that they find there, probably ignored by the more than 600 thousand people who circulate daily through the region , according to data from the City of São Paulo.

At the end of the work, there is a map that invites the reader to visit the aforementioned spaces –all of which were explored by the author at the time she completed her master’s degree at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at USP.

“The book is an invitation to these small urban and architectural discoveries, not only in the Triangle where Jacaré is lost, but also in the blocks and streets around our homes, schools, health centers and parks”, says the author.

With illustrations by Mariana Zanetti, “O Jacaré Fujão no Triângulo” will be released this Saturday (11) at Escola da Cidade, in São Paulo, from 10 am to 1 pm, with a storytelling open to the public.
