ChatGPT: why humans are still smarter – 03/30/2023 – Market

You’ve probably already used it. And you’ve definitely heard of him. ChatGPT has been touted as a game changer.

He can write songs. Explain quantum physics. And tell how I can increase my intelligence.

However, unlike humans, they are not very good at adapting, according to experts.

Google has already released a rival to ChatGPT, Bard. And this week, leading figures in artificial intelligence signed a letter in which they advocate a suspension for at least six months of the development of more powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems. They cite risks and dangers to humanity and say the race to evolve these programs is out of control.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, recently released GPT-4, an even more advanced version of the system that wowed observers.

Computers seem to be rapidly outgrowing their creators. But is this really true?

Ori Ossmy, a researcher at the Center for Brain and Cognitive Development at Birkbeck, University of London, says that “the system has very sophisticated algorithms, but what they basically do is collect a lot of information from the internet and in that way they are able to respond to different questions and requests”.

“But they are not very good in terms of adaptability. They are not very good at learning a certain thing within certain scenarios, certain environments, and then applying [essa experiência] in a different environment. Something kids and babies are very good at doing.”

Is it our ability to adapt that leaves us one step ahead of artificial intelligence?

From birth, our brain adapts and molds itself to the environment in a very efficient way.

“We’re a long, long way from adaptive computers, I think. Maybe we’ll figure out how that can happen,” says Ossmy.

“The experiences [desses algoritmos] are much less flexible, have less variation compared to what children and babies experience, who have to adapt to a different body every day.”

But neuroscientists still don’t have a very clear idea why our brains are so adaptable. And until we better understand how this process works, computers won’t be able to rival humans.

And, luckily, ChatGPT knows the limitations of its own virtual mind.

“I cannot reproduce the full extent of human intelligence,” replies the program.
