ChatGPT: EU asks leaders to control very powerful AI – 04/18/2023 – Market

EU (European Union) parliamentarians today called on world leaders to hold a summit to find ways to control the development of advanced AI (artificial intelligence) systems such as ChatGPT. According to the group, they are developing faster than expected.

The 12-member European Parliament, all working on the bloc’s technology legislation, urged US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to convene a meeting, and said AI should be more responsible.

Lawmakers said they disagreed with some of the more alarmist statements in the letter published in March by the FLI (Future of Life Institute), which warned that AI could spread misinformation at an unprecedented rate and that machines could “outnumber, be more smart, obsolete and replace” humans if left unchecked.

“However, we agree with the core message of the letter: with the rapid evolution of powerful AI, we see the need for significant political action,” they added.

The letter urged democratic and “non-democratic” countries to reflect on potential systems of governance and to exercise restraint in the pursuit of very powerful intelligences.

Contacted by Reuters, a spokesperson for Ursula von der Leyen did not respond as of this writing.

The Biden administration has also been seeking public input on possible accountability measures for AI systems, as questions arise about their impact on national security and education.

The European Commission nearly two years ago proposed draft rules for an industry-targeted law, in which AI tools must be classified according to their perceived risk level, from low to unacceptable.

A parliamentary committee is debating the 108-page bill and hopes to reach a common position by April 26, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
