Deputy Rogério Correia (PT-MG) filed a request with the Chamber to hold meetings with the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo to discuss the renegotiation of the judicial agreement on the rupture of the Fundão dam, in Mariana (MG).
According to the parliamentarian, the Renova Foundation, created to repair the victims of the tragedy in 2015, is unable to speed up the care of families and presents bureaucracy in the environmental issue. The entity is maintained by the companies Samarco, BHP Billiton and Vale.
The renegotiation of new terms is already discussed between the Lula government, MPF (Federal Public Ministry) and the mining companies that maintain the foundation. As shown by Sheetone of the proposals under discussion is the gradual end of Renova’s functions.
In 2021, the Chamber created a commission to monitor the case. Before last year’s elections, a report was approved with 84 general recommendations for the public institutions involved in the renegotiation.
The dam rupture killed 19 people and left a trail of destruction between Minas and Espírito Santo. The Renova Foundation’s indemnified list covers approximately 409,000 people.
