Both have similar design, 5G connection, same size screens and the same processor, the A15 Bionic. It also has a dual camera – a main, wide-angle, and an ultra-wide-angle. But, compared to the iPhone 14 Pro, it is a device that is a little below in terms of features. On the iPhone 14 Pro, the chip is more powerful (A16 Bionic), the camera offers more resolution (48 mp) and the operating system has more functions, such as the Dynamic Island notification area. The iPhone 14, in the version with 128 GB of storage, was sold for BRL 7,600 in online stores in March. The cell phone also has versions with 256 GB (R$ 8,600) and 512 GB (R$ 10,600). Samsung Galaxy S23 The Samsung Galaxy S23 can be considered a smaller and slightly less powerful version of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The cell phones share the processor (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy), but the S23 Ultra has more RAM (12 GB against 8 GB), a higher resolution screen and the most advanced camera (200 mp x 50 mp). And, unlike the version released in 2022 (Galaxy S22), Samsung slightly changed the product design, in addition to equipping the new model with the most current processor. The Galaxy S23, in the 128 GB version, cost BRL 5,999 in internet stores in March. The brand also offers a variant with 256 GB of internal storage, which was sold for BRL 6,400. Performance In the performance tests (see at the end how they are done), the Galaxy S23 came close, but failed to pass the iPhone 14. These tests evaluate the simulated use of the device in everyday life. In any case, neither of them slowed down or crashed during use. For games and videos, the Galaxy S23 was faster than the iPhone 14 in the most advanced graphics performance tests. In one of them, which requires less processing power, there was a tie. That means they both run high-end mobile games well. 5G In tests with 5G, the iPhone 14 reached 474 Mbps as a maximum download speed, with 46 Mbps upload. The Galaxy S23 was a little faster, hitting 483 Mbps download and 116 Mbps upload. Know the types of 5G connection This means that – probably – none of the two cell phones connected to a “pure 5G” (or standalone) network, which is faster, but to an NSA (non-standalone) network, which divides the signal with 4G networks. Battery Both iPhone 14 and Galaxy S23 can spend all day away from the socket. It is always good to point out that each person has a pattern of use and that, in practice, the cell phone will not run out of battery after this period. In tests, the Galaxy S23 hit 16 hours of use and the iPhone 14, 10:30. The Samsung model has a larger battery capacity (3,900 mAh) than the iPhone 14 (3,279 mAh). Cameras The iPhone 14 features a dual camera, with a resolution of 12 megapixels. The main one is a wide-angle lens. The second is an ultra-wide angle, which allows you to insert more elements into a photographed image. It is worth noting that the iPhone 14 does not have an optical zoom like the Galaxy S23: if you need to zoom in, it reaches up to 5x in digital zoom. But for Apple, photography is not just the sensor and the lens. Along with the A15 Bionic processor, the camera works together to create what Apple calls “computational photography”. Here, the result is automatically improved, with the expectation of always having very good photos all the time. And, in general, they are. The S23 Ultra, in comparison, is a more versatile model. It has three lenses on the back: a 50 megapixel main lens, a 12 mp wide angle lens and a 3x optical zoom with 10 mp resolution. Here, the suite of software, cameras and processor utilize what Samsung calls a “scene optimizer”. It’s an automatic way to recognize in real time what is being photographed (such as food, pets, landscapes) and adjust the camera for the best result. And the result is also excellent. Comparing the photos side by side, a difference is visible. Galaxy S23 photos are yellowish and “hot”. And those on the iPhone 14 tend to be more neutral. In the Galaxy S23 Ultra test with the iPhone 14 Pro, the result was similar. In the photos below, the difference is noticeable. But the Galaxy S23 allows you to choose, when opening the camera for the first time, whether the tone of the photos will be warmer or cooler. The photos taken on both cell phones are excellent. How the tests were done For the performance tests, three applications were used: PC Mark and 3D Mark, from UL Laboratories, and GeekBench 6, from Primate Labs. simulate everyday smartphone tasks, such as image processing, text editing, battery life and web browsing, among others. In the battery tests, smartphone screens were calibrated to 70% brightness in order to run PC Mark. This is not always possible, as not all devices allow for this fine adjustment. The battery was charged to 100% and the test ran for hours until reaching the end of charge. Upon reaching 20% ​​or less charge, the test is stopped and shows how much battery life that smartphone can have, in hours/minutes. The result is an estimate of how long that battery can last away from the socket. In practice, the real-life number can be different, as we don’t use the phone intensively all the time. For the camera tests, photos were taken indoors and on the street (when possible), with various lighting changes in similar scenarios in order to compare the images. The 5G tests were carried out using a Vivo operator line in the Cambuci district of São Paulo. Ookla’s SpeedTest app was used to measure download and upload speeds.
