Search for carnival costumes can move up to 3.5% of different jobs in Manaus

Pre-carnival has started and the sewing studio is still full of orders to be completed. After two years of circulation restrictions due to the pandemic, the most popular party in the country returns with intensity to move the costume sector and commerce in the Amazonian capital.

The survey by the Chamber of Shopkeepers of Manaus (CDL Manaus) for Carnival this year estimates a 3.5% growth in sales of products and services compared to 2019, resulting in gross revenue of BRL 48 million.

Also according to CDL Manaus, the average ticket referring to the disposal of consumption, taking into account purchases with clothes and props before Carnival, tickets and consumption during the festivities, is expected to be approximately R$ 220 per manauara who will enjoy the revelry.

The search for accessories to put together the look and enjoy the traditional street blocks and dances has intensified the orders for costumes at the seamstress Ray Sousa’s studio, located on Rua Ibicaré, Novo Aleixo, North Zone of Manaus.

“This year, expectations are high compared to 2020, when the last carnival took place. People are excited again to enjoy the holidays. In the week leading up to Carnival, I had to suspend orders to keep up with the demand and deliver a good product to my customers”, he said.

Businesswoman Amanda Cruz reported that she sought the services of the seamstress to enjoy the revelry very comfortably. The Snow White costume was one of the requests to enjoy a traditional ball in the capital.

“The party I’m going to attend requires a lot of preparation, so I thought of wearing something made-to-measure and I ordered the character’s clothes made by Dona Ray’s hands, because I already know that her service is quality”, she said.

In addition to the character costumes that are trending, Ray explained that this year’s trend is very bright and colorful.

“Tulle skirts, tiaras, sequins, lurex, tulle with glitter, these accessories are back with everything. It’s what’s in fashion and what people are asking for a lot. And that’s what Carnival is, it has to have several colors and the party calls for this mixture”, he concludes.

Temporary jobs

According to the vice-president of the Municipal Foundation for Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult), Oreni Braga, a financial transfer of R$ 2,229,541.60 for the samba school parade, which reaches an average audience of over 65 One thousand people. The investment means an increase in the financial volume of tax collection such as, for example, the collection of the Tax on Services of Any Nature (ISS).

Oreni Braga also explained that the resource paid to the samba sector generates more than 20,000 temporary jobs, 4,500 of which are directly linked to schools.

“In addition to being a beautiful popular festival, Carnival is also responsible for moving some sectors of the economy, in addition to increasing sales in hardware, steel, wood, paint, fabrics, beverages and food,” he said.

In all, the City of Manaus injected more than R$ 6 million into the samba schools of Special Groups “A” and “B”, and 109 street blocks spread across all areas of the Amazonian capital, generating movement in the production chain of culture .
