Candidacy for researcher brings election of the first counselor at Concultura closer

Manaus (AM) – From election to election, the Municipal Council of Culture (Concultura), in the literature segment, elected, every time, male candidates for the position of councilor. The absence of women in positions of power proves the systematic inequality that women face in different areas.

The professor, researcher and post-doctorate in Literature at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM), Iná Isabel Rafael, is applying to change this scenario. Despite changes in the sociopolitical context at the state and national level, the professor reflected on the lack of effective representation of women in politics, even when there is expertise, qualified knowledge and academic training.

“Electing a woman to the position of Councilor will make the Council much more represented, given that the numerous social problems that exist in the region mainly affect women, including children and adolescents. It is possible to change this context through education, arts and culture”,

declared.

The elections for the representation of Civil Society, which will take place in the 2024-2025 biennium, will take place on February 20th, from 9am to 5pm, at the Concultura headquarters, on Av. Sete de Setembro, Praça Dom Pedro II, Centro.

The notice provides for the rules for the participation of both voters and candidates for the position of councilors, who must be from cultural segments, including Theater and Circus, Dance, Music, Visual Arts, Literature, Audiovisual, Ethnic Culture and Popular Culture. Registration to vote or run for office closed on Friday (19).

For voting in the literature segment, professionals who work as authors, editors, reviewers, designers, illustrators, booksellers, literary critics, journalists and literature teachers are eligible to vote.

Among the proposals for Literature, Iná Rafael indicates the creation of proposals to encourage the appreciation of culture through anti-racist, decolonial and insubaltern public education; encouraging the production, dissemination and publication of works made by independent artists; the organization of events that relate different artistic segments; the proposal of policies to support local writers for the publication of works; and, the promotion of spaces for the presentation of products from popular culture.

The promotion of events, especially those that emphasize the work carried out by women, is already carried out by the teacher. The 1st Municipal Meeting of Writers Manauaras, held in December 2023, at Casarão da Inovação Cassina, was proposed by Iná Rafael and approved by the ‘Manaus Faz Cultura 2023’ notice.

Other projects carried out include: “Amazon Literatures and Cultures: women in the secret society of the Amazon rubber plantations”, “I Literary Exhibition of Anti-Racist Politicians” and “Literature in four scenes – Feminism and culture for an anti-racist, decolonial and (in)subaltern education ”.

To contribute even more to Amazonian literature, the search for equalization of the segment with other forms of art and in areas of knowledge is a fundamental path. For Iná Rafael, offering support, be it political, economic and physical, based on incentive policies, for literary creations by independent artists can contribute to the development of literature in the State.

During the electoral campaign process, the researcher has already defined the steps to publicize her candidacy. “I intend to promote it on digital media, meeting with research and study groups, participating in cultural events, promoting my productions on social networks and seeking partnerships with other cultural producers, both in the North and other regions of Brazil,” she said.

Meet the candidate

The professor, essayist and researcher of Amazonian culture, Iná Rafael is also a cultural producer, academic advisor, director of Amazônica Edições and leader of the Gremplexa research group (CNPQ/UFAM), since 2014. In addition, she has eleven book publications, including them, “Literature: multiple approaches”, “Amazonian expressions in literature” and “Sociocultural processes and practices in the Amazon”.
