Can doctors leave the shift for dinner? – 07/11/2023 – Gross Kitchen

I have some regrets in life. One of them is having burned time and money –when I had it– on long lunches during working hours.

When I worked in the CLT scheme, with hours to meet, lunch was a temporary escape. I was miserable if I ate in the company cafeteria or ordered any crap from a delivery service.

I liked it when all the people from work went out to eat together, clogging up sidewalks from doorstep to curb.

I would take the car and go to lunch at PQP. If she had a mall nearby, she would go two or three times a week. I spent my money at America, at Ráscal and at other places that deliver very little given the size of the bill.

And I was worried because the food took a long time, and I had things to do.

Was having lunch with colleagues cool? Yes, but never as cool as drinking with them after hours.

I regret so many times not having resolved life quickly with tray or padoca salty, alone at the counter. Life happens outside of work, which I didn’t realize.

I’m bringing this up because of a row between doctors and non-doctors that broke out on Twitter.

The story begins with a lawyer from Recife who went to an emergency room (he didn’t say why) and found the wait empty at the beginning of the night. After being triaged in the ward, she had to wait another 40 minutes to be seen by a doctor.

The reason for the delay: the two doctors on duty went out to dinner together, as there were no patients to see before our lawyer arrived.

In the face of the majority’s indignation in the comments, the medical profession came together to defend their colleagues.

They said that doctors, like any other professional, have the right to eat during working hours.

Righteous.

But the two together? Some doctors came to say that there is no fence (impediment), unless they are responsible for red tokens – hospital jargon for patients who are in the crow’s beak.

That’s where things get complicated.

It may not be prohibited by law or statutes, but that doesn’t mean that the doctors’ actions were reasonable or legal.

Why would they need to have dinner together? To talk? Wouldn’t they have the rest of the shift to exchange ideas?

On duty is not a guard, observes a doctor. It is always expected, however, that there is someone on duty on duty, as emergency cases do not schedule an appointment.

If there is only one person on duty, he also needs to eat, argues a health professional. Perfect, but there were two.

Doctor is a professional, not a philanthropist, claims another CRM. Okay, just don’t be misanthropic. If they had common sense and a minimum of consideration for patients, they would have taken turns eating dinner.

As someone said in Elon’s network: imagine if two doctors enter an empty restaurant and have to wait an hour to eat because it was the cook’s lunch time.
