Bank denied that individuals would also be charged
Caixa announced at the end of this Tuesday (20) that it suspended Pix’s charge for legal entities. The rate would go into effect on July 19 and, according to the public bank, it is practiced by “practically all financial institutions”.
The suspension came after the request of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as disclosed earlier by the Minister of Civil Affairs, Rui Costa. According to the minister, the decision will be discussed next week, after Lula returns from his official trip to Europe.
“You have been asked to temporarily suspend [a decisão da Caixa] until the president is back next week”, said Costa in a quick interview with journalists. “So let’s wait for the president’s return to evaluate this measure. The president you asked for.”
In a note, the bank says that the suspension “aims to extend the period so that customers can adapt and receive broad clarification from the bank on the subject, given the proliferation of untrue content that generated speculation”
Charge
Costa said he had spoken with the president of Caixa, Rita Serrano. According to the minister, she was surprised by the repercussion of the measure because the other banks charge the Pix operations of legal entities, with authorization from the Central Bank (BC).
“The information she [Rita Serrano] What passed me was that all banks already charge this fee from legal entities. The only bank that didn’t charge was Caixa for technical reasons, of technology”, he explained. “She didn’t expect it to have this reach, this repercussion, Caixa’s determination to keep up with other banks.”
On the night of this Monday (19), Caixa announced the start of charging Pix from legal entities on July 19. The bank denied false news that individuals would also be charged.
“Caixa does not charge Pix tariffs from its individual customers, individual microentrepreneurs (MEI) and beneficiaries of social programs”, highlighted the statement.
The bank also noted that charging Pix from companies has been authorized since the tool was created in November 2020, and that it will offer one of the lowest rates on the market.
