BYD will open a development center in Salvador, as an arm of factories in Bahia

The company announced in July that it will have three factories in the municipality of Camaçari, Metropolitan Region of Salvador, in the industrial complex where the Ford factory was installed. The American automaker left the country in January 2021, ending production in the largest Industrial Pole in Bahia. “We are going to bring in experts to inaugurate a research and development center in Salvador, to transform the region into a Brazilian ‘Silicon Valley’”, said Tyler Li, president of BYD in Brazil. The announcement was made at an automaker event in São Paulo, with the presence of the governor of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT). “We have an ongoing tax reform. And President Lula’s posture is that incentives happen to stimulate the arrival of this type of investment”, said the governor. “We celebrate this announcement with great joy. We have every interest in Brazil being stimulated with measures like this, for the training of professionals and researchers. BYD will leave to Brazil and Bahia the possibility of creating jobs and income, but also the presence of professionals developing this research here”, he said. The Government of Bahia is in final negotiations to replace Ford with BYD in the Camaçari Industrial Complex. According to Governor Rodrigues, the government’s estimate is that by October the adaptation works by BYD can begin. According to the government, more than five thousand direct jobs will be generated by BYD. The company will invest BRL 3 billion to install the three factories, and production is expected to start in the second half of 2024.
