BYD launched the Yangwang U9, its most expensive car, this Sunday (25). The sports model is fully electric, can reach 100 km/h in 2.36 seconds and reach a top speed of 309.19 km/h, according to the automaker.
The sports car will initially only be sold in China and will cost 1.6 million yuan (US$233,450, approximately R$1.17 million). BYD’s goal is for the vehicle to compete with sports versions from Ferrari and Lamborghini.
BYD became the largest seller of electric cars in the world, overtaking Tesla in the last quarter of 2023. Although it is best known for making affordable electric vehicles, the company markets its luxury models under the Yangwang and Fang Cheng Bao brands.
With a post-Lunar New Year price war looming in China, the Shenzhen-based giant is betting that there is still a market for high-quality, value-for-money products.
Other expensive electric vehicles under the Yangwang brand are expected to be launched later this year in China, including a luxury sedan that will cost around 1 million yuan ($145,900).
Yangwang started delivering cars at the end of November, but of a version prior to the U9. By the end of January, the company had delivered 3,653 units of the U8, which costs 1.1 million yuan (US$160,500).
