Activist Bruno Gagliasso, 41, has become a successful entrepreneur. Those who know him say, jokingly, that he doesn’t even need to work anymore. This month, he launches his newest investment in a platform that sells so-called sustainability credits — a green currency that is quoted globally.

A supporter of Lula during the campaign, Gagliasso defends the president’s policy, which seeks foreign investment in the Amazon. For him, countries want to take care of the forest not only because the world needs it, but also because it gives money.

Do you define yourself as an environmental activist? Yes. It was going to the Amazon, and seeing that forest catch fire with my own eyes, that I discovered my mission in life. I am a Unicef ​​Ambassador [órgão da ONU voltado à infância]. Today, it is not possible to take care of children and not take care of nature. My enthusiasm and environmental activism led me to entrepreneurship in biodiversity.

Does investing in the environment pay off? Green currency is no longer the future. It’s the present. This market is the fastest growing. In our company, the BMV [Brasil Mata Viva], we are talking about a billion, not a million. All countries are putting money into the Amazon. And they want to take care of the forest because the world needs it and because it gives money. It’s a new market.

You are a partner in many companies. I’m only in the ones I believe in and that I think will make a difference in the world. Today I invest in Loft, Credpago, BMV.

President Lula was committed to the green agenda. Does this encourage new business in this area? Totally. All you have to do is open the newspapers and see the amount of money that foreign countries are investing in Brazil. We have the forest. Everything the world wants to preserve is here. So let’s preserve it and make money from it.

How does your new business work? The BMV calculates the value of assets—preservation of water flow, for example—of standing forest. And turns that into a UCS (Sustainability Credit Unit). Afterwards, she tokenizes these assets and sells them on the market. A forest that is being tended is then converted into UCSs. The person who buys them becomes an associate. It is not worth money because my company is talking about it, it is because internationally it is worth money. And go to market.
