The kinship between the director of Anvisa Daniel Meirelles and his brother, Thiago Meirelles, who took charge of PróGenéricos (an entity of the generics industry) this year, entered the discussion about the autonomy of regulatory agencies.
After a group of 30 private associations in the health sector, including PróGenéricos, launched a manifesto against the amendment presented this month by federal deputy Danilo Forte (União-CE) to provisional measure 1.154, saying that it could harm the independence of agencies regulators, the parliamentarian reacted.
On social media, this Thursday (16), Forte cited a report on the case of the brothers at Anvisa and said that regulatory agencies need external supervision. “Its autonomy must be maintained and its directors must be independent, but all of this must serve the interests of the population and not of the regulated companies”, wrote the deputy.
“It is against this type of abuse that we fight”, he added, referring to the connection between Daniel and Thiago, which has been raising questions about possible conflicts of interest in the agency’s decisions.
Forte’s amendment proposes the creation of councils linked to the ministries to deliberate on regulatory activities along with the agencies, but it is seen in the sector as an attempt to weaken the autonomy of regulatory bodies.
Among the members of PróGenéricos there are large pharmaceutical companies such as Neo Química, Medley, Libbs, Geolab, Eurofarma, EMS, Cimed, Brain Farma and Prati Donaduzzi. Sought by Panel SA, the companies did not comment on the subject.
