Exactly one year after surprising in the Brazilian Beer Contest, Alem Bier, from Rio Grande do Sul, was again elected the best brewery in the country this Wednesday (8), in Blumenau (SC).

Located inside the Monte Reale winery, in Flores da Cunha (RS), Alem Bier won 12 medals at the CBC, two more than the 2022 contest. sour Italian grape ale) and eight bucks.

Interestingly, the award takes place a few weeks after a controversy involving other wineries in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Bento Gonçalves, in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul. Workers were rescued in a system analogous to slavery. The wineries involved sympathized with the employees and informed that the responsibility lay with an outsourced company. Aurora, who had her name on the case, even published an open letter, in which she said she was ashamed of the case.

Founded in 2017, Alem Bier produces traditional styles, but stands out with aged labels or wild yeasts, something they learned precisely from the experience gained in handling grapes.

The Tannat Grape Ale label (sour Italian grape ale) also won the Best of Show award, that is, it was chosen the best among all the samples that participated in the event.

In its 11th edition, the Brazilian Beer Contest was dominated by breweries from the southern region, which dominated the first five positions.

In second place was Leopoldina, also from Rio Grande do Sul — the one most easily found around here. Like the champion, she also had 12 medals, with 4 gold and 8 silver. But the result of the Best of Show broke the tie in favor of Alem Bier.

Third was Big Jack from Santa Catarina, with 9 medals, six gold and three bronze. Completing the top 5 were La Birra (10 medals, 4 golds, 2 silvers and 4 bronzes) and Sabores do Malte (10 medals, 2 golds, 3 silvers and 5 bronzes) from Paraná.

To decide the best brewery, each gold medal is worth 3 points, silver, 2, and bronze, 1.

This year, the CBC broke the record for samples received. There were 4,085 variations from 565 breweries, spread across 25 states in the country.

Many of the breweries awarded at the event will be available until Saturday (11), at the Brazilian Beer Festival, which takes place at Parque Vila Germânica, the stage for the traditional Oktoberfest in Blumenau.
