Brazil will sign an agreement to triple renewable energy – 11/24/2023 – Environment

Brazil signed an agreement to triple renewable energy by 2030 and move away from the use of coal, according to a document obtained by Reuters this Friday (24). The Brazilian signature joins a possible agreement articulated for COP28 (UN conference on climate change), already supported by the European Union, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

Brazil is now one of around a hundred countries to sign the agreement, according to a European official familiar with the matter.

Sources told Reuters this month that the aim is for the agreement to be officially adopted by leaders participating in the COP28 climate negotiations, which begin next week in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

The Brazilian embassy in Abu Dhabi stated in a letter to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the country would adhere to the agreement entitled “Global Commitment on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Targets”.

Itamaraty has not responded to questions sent by the report regarding the letter so far.

Brazil already has an important participation in the renewable energy sector. More than 80% of the country’s electricity comes from renewable sources, led by hydropower, with solar and wind power expanding rapidly.

Coal represents just over 1% of Brazil’s electricity, according to official statistics.

The renewable energy draft, reviewed by Reuters, commits to “the uninterrupted phase-down of coal power”, including ending financing for new coal-fired power plants.

It also includes a commitment to double the global annual rate of energy efficiency improvements to 4% per year by 2030.
