Brazil has registered two cases of avian flu in wild birds on the coast of Espírito Santo, said the country’s Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, in a message on Twitter.
“We had confirmation that two wild birds, of the species known as Trinta-Réis-de-Bando…”, he said.
In a note, the Ministry of Agriculture highlighted that the notification of infection by the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus (IAAP) in wild birds does not affect the condition of Brazil as a country free of the disease.
For this reason, the ministry considers that member countries of the WHOA (World Organization for Animal Health) should not impose bans on international trade in Brazilian poultry products, since the cases were registered in wild birds.
Brazil is the largest global exporter of chicken meat.
The ABPA (Brazilian Association of Animal Protein) informed this Monday (15) that the entity and the entire productive sector do not expect any change in relation to the internal supply of poultry products, due to the registration of two cases of avian flu in birds forests in Espírito Santo.
“It is important to reiterate that the situation was registered in two migratory seabirds, and did not occur within the Brazilian industrial system, which follows the strictest biosecurity protocols”, highlighted the association.
The organization also said that “no changes are expected in the flow of international trade in Brazilian products, based on the recommendations of the World Organization for Animal Health” with regard to cases in wild birds.
The ABPA emphasized that the consumption of poultry meat and eggs is completely safe, according to information scientifically supported by the WHOA, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and other internationally recognized bodies.
