Brazil lost more than 400,000 companies in the first half of 2023

This is a negative balance between open and closed companies in the country, excluding Individual Microentrepreneurs (MEIs) from the account. The survey was carried out and transferred to g1 by Contabilizei, based on records from the National Register of Legal Entities (CNPJs), from the Federal Revenue Service. In relation to previous years, company closures have been more frequent than openings since the 4th quarter of 2021. Since then, the balance shows that more than 750 thousand companies have been eliminated from the Brazilian economy. In that interval, 2.08 million companies were opened while 2.83 million were closed. The situation is more dramatic in industry, even though it has the lowest quantitative weight in lifting. Still, the numbers draw attention when put in proportion. Namely: three times more industrial companies were closed than opened in the 2nd quarter of this year. In the period, 7,810 industrial companies were inaugurated, but 25,151 were closed. In addition, industry has had a negative balance for a longer time, since the 3rd quarter of 2021. Commerce started to have a negative balance in the 4th quarter of 2021, while services only went into the negative field in the 3rd quarter of 2022. In numbers In absolute terms, trade performs the worst. 129,515 companies were closed in the 2nd quarter of 2023, against 61,685 openings. That means approximately two companies closed for every one that opened. Services, by comparison, closed 196,651 businesses and opened another 133,836 in the second quarter of this year. Also in the percentage ratio, 1.5 companies closed for every one that opened. “It was a period that brought several difficulties imposed on the financial management of companies, in addition to a high level of indebtedness of the population. Even the reheating of the formal job market makes entrepreneurs return to salaried work”, says Guilherme Soares, Vice President of Acquisition and Revenue at Contabilizei. On the other hand, a recent survey by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) shows that, even in a more challenging scenario, micro and small businesses created almost 710,000 jobs in the first half of the year and boosted the creation of formal jobs in the country. The number corresponds to about 70% of the total vacancies with a formal contract generated in the period. According to Sebrae, the picture is similar to what had already been registered in the first half of 2021 and 2022. When formatting a Microenterprise (ME), more bureaucratic steps are required, more documents presented and the hiring of an accountant. “The MEI is more susceptible to the short-term economic scenario. During the pandemic, many people had to provide services at a distance or even because of the loss of their jobs”, says Soares, from Contabilizei. MEI casualties are also rarer. With low costs to keep the company open, many entrepreneurs can keep the company open without an ongoing operation. In the survey, months of high lows were detected, but largely due to government actions to clean the register. But there are sectors within the MEIs and MEs that gained gas even in the post-pandemic, due to an increase in the provision of own and remote services. Soares explains that there is both a movement of those who “emancipate” from the corporate market and start working for themselves, as well as a reinforcement of sectors such as technology, which started to work for foreign employers. On the companies side, the connection with larger suppliers also forced formalizations. This is the case of e-commerces, which are linked to large marketplaces run by retailers. For operations on the main platforms, entrepreneurs needed to issue invoices for the products. “Many qualified professionals never want to go back to face-to-face work, for example. And this should continue to increase the number of openings of MEIs and MEs”, says Soares.
