Brazil is 13th among 30 countries in well-being at work – 11/03/2023 – Market

Brazil ranked 13th in a global ranking of well-being at work, measured by the assessment of physical, mental, social and spiritual health, according to the results of a survey conducted by the McKinsey Health Institute.

In the country, 62% of respondents considered they had good health in the workplace. The study, released this Thursday (2), was carried out with more than 30,000 workers in 30 countries.

Turkey came first with 78%, followed by India with 76% and China with 75%. Japan came in last place, with 25%. The global average was 57%.

Other developed countries, such as Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany, had 47%, 43% and 51%, respectively. The United States and Switzerland had the same rate as Brazil, 62%.

In Japan, although companies have built a reputation for offering stability and security, employees may have difficulty changing jobs if they are not satisfied.

The country consistently scores low in international surveys and the results reflect that, according to Rochelle Kopp, who advises companies on intercultural communication and business practices.

“There’s this documented tendency to undervalue yourself,” said Kopp, who is also a board member of MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings. “There are significant problems in Japan with a lack of satisfaction in the workplace, with significant levels of stress.”

At the same time, a growing number of Japanese workers are on short-term contracts, fueling stability uncertainty, she added.

According to McKinsey research, employees who have positive experiences report better holistic health (which takes into account the four types of health), are more innovative and perform better at work.

“For most adults, the majority of daily time is spent at work,” the report’s authors wrote. “This offers employers the opportunity to influence the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of their employees.”
