Brasileirão deals suffer defeat to the US league – 05/28/2023 – Panel SA

Brazilian football, known for decades as the breadbasket of world sport, lost out in business generated by teams in the US professional league, where sport is not even a national passion.
A survey by the marketing consultancy Sports Value shows that, this year, the North American clubs in the first division, the MLS (Major League Soccer), moved BRL 8.3 billion in total revenues – including money from the sale of athletes. In the Brasileirão, this performance was R$ 7.5 billion.
Last year, a preview of the survey already signaled this movement made with a smaller universe of teams.
Despite this, great national teams, such as Flamengo and Palmeiras, lead the list of operating revenues on the continent (see ranking below). As for the teams, the game changes: 18 are from MLS, 10 from Brasileirão and two from Argentina.
Sports Value assesses that the trend for the next few years is an even greater domination of Americans, given the higher sales in marketing and box office in stadiums.
The three teams that had the highest operating revenues in 2022 (without the sale of athletes) were Flamengo, with BRL 1 billion, followed by Palmeiras (BRL 682 million) and Corinthians (BRL 633 million). North American clubs follow soon after.
The only segment in which Brazil still excels is with revenue from television (transmission rights, for example): R$ 2.8 billion in Brazil, against R$ 1.25 billion in the USA.
“The size of the Brazilian market is the result of the high values of television and marketing contracts. The values received with TV by Flamengo are greater than all the TV received by teams from Chile, Colombia or Argentina, for example”, says Amir Somoggi , a partner at Sports Value.
