Heavy rock group from Minas Gerais releases its first album in English with punk-inspired songs that perpetuate the history of black people’s resistance. The Minas Gerais trio Black Pantera releases the EP ‘Griô’ tomorrow, November 17th, with five songs in English recorded with production by Rafael Ramos Ênio César / Disclosure Cover of the EP ‘Griô’, by the group Black Pantera Art by Gustavo Cruzeiro EP review Title: Griô Artist: Black Pantera Edition: Deck Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ♪ “My soul is on fire, this is destiny / They will never kill us or erase our history”, shouts Charles Gama, vocalist and guitarist of Black Pantera, a band heavy rock from Minas Gerais, in English verses by RISE, a song written by the trio’s members. RISE is hardcore punk that incorporates a similar reggae vibe without attenuating the weight of the recording. RISE is the second of five songs on Griô, an EP recorded by Charles Gama, Chaene da Gama (bass and vocals) and Rodrigo Pancho (drums). In rotation from tomorrow, November 17th, the EP Griô is Black Pantera’s first album entirely in English. With an unprecedented original repertoire, signed jointly by the members of the trio, the album reaches the world at a time when the group is still fulfilling the schedule of the international tour of the show based on the trio’s third album, Ascensão (2022). The five songs on the Griô EP are in tune with the activist spirit of Black Pantera, a group engaged in the black movement that makes a sound based on trash metal and hardcore punk. The ideology of the punk universe inspired the trio to create lofty and imperative songs such as the hardcore Shut up n’ f… up. Preceded by the single that featured the track Dreadpool, the Griô EP keeps the band’s activism on high heat, even when it exposes vulnerabilities, as in Burnout. Closing with Ukumkani, a theme highlighted by a recording that exposes the incandescent footprint of the power trio, the EP Griô was named after a word of African origin that designates “the guardian of the oral memory of a people”. “We end up being griots of our era, because we talk about recovery, the black movement, activists, the history of black people, empires and everything else. We tell the story of our people, so erased, so kidnapped, but in a way that we can take it back and show that we are history beyond slavery, which is also a way of combating racism and elevating our ancestors, our people”, contextualizes bassist Chaene da Gama. Recorded in the studio of Rio label Deck, Tambor, the Griô EP was mastered by Chris Hanzsek at Hanzsek Audio in Seattle (USA). Signed by Gustavo Cruzeiro, the cover of the EP Griô evokes the ancestry embedded in the title mentioned by Chaene in this album in which, with keen awareness, Black Pantera feeds the flame that enlivens and perpetuates the history of resistance of black people.
