Biodiesel sector says CNT despises the environment – 02/27/2023 – Panel SA

Representatives of the biofuel market reacted to statements made by the CNT (Confederação Nacional dos Transportes) in recent days that freight will become more expensive if the government decides to raise the percentage of biodiesel in the mandatory diesel blend.

In the opinion of the CNT, the increase in biodiesel in truck and bus fuel could worsen pollution because, according to the entity, it reduces engine efficiency, increasing consumption.

Abiove (Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries), Aprobio (Association of Biofuel Producers in Brazil) and Ubrabio (Brazilian Union of Biodiesel and Biokerosene) asked CNT to explain their statements in the context of commitments with RenovaBio (program to raise energy matrix the participation of less polluting fuels than petroleum derivatives) and with the planet’s decarbonization process.

For the CNT, “the eventual increase in the biodiesel content will generate additional costs to the freight value, which will be transferred to the entire population, translating into inflationary increases and making transport even more expensive and, consequently, the products consumed and exported “.

The entities claim that the statements made by the CNT are false and reveal contempt for the environment and people’s health. “CNT’s positioning puts at risk an extensive production chain that generates jobs for the population and revenue for the State, develops the national economy with investment, supports small farmers, reduces the emission of greenhouse gases, improves the environment and the citizen’s quality of life”, say Abiove, Aprobio and Ubrabio in a note.

The FPBio, (Frente Parlamentar Mista do Biodiesel) also came out in defense of the fuel. In a note released this Monday (27th), he defended that “the percentage to be defined by the CNPE (National Council for Energy Policy), whose decision should come out in March, is compatible with the possibility of the industry and the national interest, even if progressive up to B15, a percentage of 15% to diesel, provided for by law”.

Throughout the Bolsonaro administration, the government made cuts in the percentage of the mixture as a way to lower the price of diesel at service stations and calm the conflicting relationship with truck drivers. Until 2021, the mixture was 14%. Today it is at 10%.
