Biodegradable packaging in delivery: learn about iFood action

The largest Brazilian company in the delivery segment, iFood made a public commitment to reduce the weight of the amount of plastic used for deliveries by 50% by 2025. One of the company’s actions in this regard was the investment in the development of biodegradable packaging. This year, the company expects to invest US$ 100,000 for the development and supply to partners of trays for transporting food made with compostable materials.
These biodegradable packages were developed by the startup growPack and have corn straw and other biomass as raw materials. Last year, around 30,000 packages of this type were produced for the testing phase. Of these, 18 thousand have already been delivered, free of charge, to some partner restaurants of different types of cuisine in the region of Campinas (SP).
“Companies joined forces with market intelligence and expertise to build better and more resistant packaging that causes less impact on the environment, both during production and disposal. In addition, we want the product to become part of the day-to-day life of partner restaurants as a viable alternative for the protection and conservation of delivery foods, with socio-environmental awareness”, says Alexandre Lima, iFood’s sustainability manager.
Located in Vinhedo, in the interior of São Paulo, the startup growPack uses a technology that is 100% mechanical and adaptable to other types of biomass. In the process, there is also no chemical cooking of the raw materials, which reduces the ecological footprint and production costs.
“GrowPack has a pioneering technology in the world. We innovated based on a technology that is already a trend in other countries and created our own process to create a biomaterial that is even more functional and sustainable than traditional molded fiber”, explains Exequiel Bunge Berg, CEO of growPack.
According to the supplier, these trays are microwave, oven, and freezer safe and safe to use with any packaged food. In addition, they resist for up to 36 hours in contact with liquids. Finally, the material was well accepted by the public, with 77% of consumers stating that they prefer sustainable packaging to plastic and aluminum.
“The customer recognizes the importance of sustainability and sees it as value when consuming a product,” says businesswoman Julia Dobes, owner of the Flow Fresh restaurant franchise in Campinas. The house was one of the partners that used and evaluated the new packages in the testing phase.
At this stage, the establishments received the packages free of charge and helped collect feedback on the use of the material. For this, both restaurants and consumers answered questions about assembly experience, appearance, temperature and usability. Now, the packages are available for purchase within the iFood platform for partner restaurants.
