Tech giants including Apple, Meta and Google fall under the Digital Services Act. Norm requires more transparency in ads, prohibits advertising to children or based on sensitive data, among other measures. Facebook, Apple, Google and Microsoft Montage/Reuters The “big techs”, as the technology giants are called, will have to follow stricter rules in the European Union starting this Friday (25). The change affects services from Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook (check out the full list at the end). They fall under what was named the Digital Services Act (DSA). The rule defines that large internet companies must share algorithms with EU experts, guarantee privacy and protection of minors, among other points. At this stage, the DSA applies to all digital platforms with more than 45 million users in the 27 EU countries. In all, 19 services are part of this cut. On February 17, 2024, the rules will apply to other online businesses, regardless of size. Under the Digital Services Law, platforms must: Combat the dissemination of illegal goods, services or content; Provide means of verifying business account holders in order to identify who sells illegal items; Prohibit advertising directed at children or based on sensitive data, such as ethnicity, political opinion, sexual orientation or religion; Label ads with information about who paid for them and create repositories with data about ads being served; Informing why certain information was suggested to the user and offering him a means of opting out of being included in recommendation systems; Publish transparency reports on content moderation decisions and allow users to challenge decisions; Allow researchers to have access to essential data about the operation of their systems to assess whether the service follows guidelines to reduce risks on the internet; Provide accessible summary of terms and conditions documents; Review systems to ensure a high level of privacy, security and protection of minors.
