Brewers don’t need an excuse to head to their favorite pub, brewpub or taproom on a Friday, but the first Friday in August comes with good reason. The date, which this year falls on the 4th, has been known since 2007 as International Beer Day — the idea of a happy American from California that soon became popular in all alcoholic corners of the world.
In São Paulo, bars offer discounts or promotions on glasses, cans or growlers (that one-liter bottle to take home… or not). Check out some tips for celebrating malt, yeast and hops… and water.
Hiding place
Home to Juan Caloto beers, Esconderijo maintains the old-west atmosphere of the labels, with a small room (or saloon), rustic decor, a beautiful counter and even a centenary piano, which works. This Friday (4), all beers available in the eight taps and cans are 10% off. A good time to try the imperial stout Uno a Menos para Dividir la Recompensa (R$32).

In Largo da Batata, the São Paulo branch of the Rio de Janeiro brewery offers a 20% discount on all 1-liter growlers on Friday (4). Those who go to the house can also take the opportunity to taste the four new IPAs, launched on Thursday (3), to get in the mood for IPA Day SP (on Saturday, 5, at Cervejaria Tarantino). There are two New England IPAs and two West Coast IPAs, which bring varied aromas, such as guava or peach. Whoever consumes five 300 ml glasses of the novelties takes a keychain-opener from the house.

From the 1st, until Saturday (5), the Itaim pub celebrates Beer Day with a promotion; with the purchase of three pints, the fourth is on the house. The selected labels are three versions of Wallaby draft beer, new to the menu: a hop lager, an Indian pale ale (named after Young) and a stout (R$32 each).

O’Malley’s
The traditional Irish-style pub in the Jardins region will have 500 ml cans of imported labels at special prices on August 4th. Among them, the classic English London Pride, for R$ 29, or the German Karlsbrau Kellerbier, for R$ 17. There is also a bottle of Black Cab Stout, by Fuller’s, for R$ 35. On Fridays, a pint of Blue Moon comes with 20% discount. To complete the day, concerts with Will Nery (acoustic rock), at 7 pm, and Sondbroder (pop rock), at 11 pm.

More than 20 taps fill glasses with national brands, such as Rueira’s dry stout (R$29.90, a pint) or Dádiva’s double IPA (R$34.90), in addition to four cheaper Burgman styles . On Beer Day, the promotion is aimed at those who will take the beer home, with 1 liter growlers with 20% off.

Tank Brewpub
From the same creators of Ambar, also in Pinheiros, the brewpub (that is, it produces beer on site) celebrates Beer Day with a promotion in partnership with Tabasco. The house offers the combo with the Franfrito portion (crispy chicken wings and drumsticks, with spices and a touch of Jalapeño pepper) and the Tankator doppelbock winter beer for R$50. $60 (tip: order the beer with the poking, which heats up the foam and stimulates the caramels in the glass).

Carlos Lima curates rotating beers and draft beers, hooked up to the 16 taps at the house on the corner of Praça Roosevelt. The selection may include styles such as Santista Everbrew’s Irish red ale (R$20, 300 ml) or Guarnieri’s American IPA (R$26, 300 ml). On Friday (4), some selected taps have a promotional value: pay for the 300 ml and take the 450 ml.
