The biggest competition of its kind in Brazil, the Concurso Brasileiro de Cervejas confirms its mania for grandeur for the 2023 edition, which takes place between the 6th and 8th of March.
This year, 4,085 samples from 565 breweries across the country are registered. In 2022, the edition that previously held the record, there were 3,635 labels, which means current growth of around 12%. The number of breweries, however, was not surpassed — in the previous event there were 587 breweries.
If the number of breweries has decreased, they are more spread across the country. This year, 25 states are represented, four more than in 2022. Only Acre and Roraima are absent from the contest, which awards gold, silver or bronze medals to 166 different styles of beer.
“We have established ourselves as a world reference, quite an achievement for our country, given such representativeness”, celebrates Develon da Rocha, president of the Blumenauense Association of Tourism, Events and Culture (Ablutec), which organizes the event.
This year, the Brazilian Beer Festival takes place again following the contest, as part of the Brazilian Beer Week (www.semanadacervejabrasileira.com.br), at Parque Vila Germânica, stage of the traditional Oktoberfest in Blumenau.
Open to the public, the FBC takes place between the 8th and 11th of March, bringing together booths from some of the main craft beers in the country. Tickets are on sale on the Ticket Mais website (access this link), starting at R$22 (R$11, half ticket).
Last year, the gaucho brewery Alem Bier, from Flores da Cunha, was the CBC champion, with 10 medals (4 gold). The Blumenau (SC) brewery was in second, with the also from Santa Catarina Sabores do Malte in third.
In addition to the best brewery, the best label among the 4,085 entries wins the Best of Show award, which this year guarantees participation in the prestigious Brussels Beer Challenge, in Belgium, and European Beer Star, in Germany.
In an exchange with Italy, the best in Italian grape ale and sour Italian grape ale styles will also compete in a world of beers of the genre, on Italian soil.
