Bebeto Alves sang that, in the footsteps of his boots, he took the streets of Porto Alegre. And now, five months after the death of the multi-artist and composer, Bebeto will be taken by the boots of his companions to the stage, for the last time. The band that accompanied him for two decades will take to the stage of Theatro São Pedro (Praça Marechal Deodoro, s/n) this Wednesday, at 9 pm, all of Bebeto’s dreams, alongside big names in the Rio Grande do Sul music scene.
Humberto Gessinger, Duca Leindecker, Vitor Ramil, Flavio Adonis, Mauro Moraes, Nelson Coelho de Castro, Neto Fagundes, Gelson Oliveira, Igor Conrad, Shana Müller, Rodrigo Fishman, Thiago Ferraz and Veco Marques are among those who will pay homage to life and to the work of the giant artist who was — and will always be — Bebeto Alves. The show For the last time will be commanded by the band that accompanied the musician since 2003, Os Blackbagual. The show takes place on the date that marks the 19th anniversary of the release of the group’s first album. Tickets are on sale on the Theatro website, starting at R$80.00. All income from the show’s box office will be donated to the Associação Peito Aberto, an institution that helps children with lung problems, the cause of the musician’s death.
For the last time it is also the name of the last album released by the band, in 2020. Together, Bebeto Alves, Marcelo Corsetti (guitar), Luke Faro (drums) and Rodrigo Reinheimer (bass) recorded five albums over two decades. With melodies full of individuality and timeless and necessary lyrics, Bebeto seemed to know no limits. He overflowed and flooded everything with his genius and restlessness – in a way, always larger than life itself. “Always in profusion. Always very restless. Always a lot of everything”, defines Rodrigo Reinheimer.
Director of the Funarte Music Center, president of the Cooperativa Mista dos Músicos de Porto Alegre, creator of the Roda Som Project, composer, singer, photographer and actor, Bebeto Alves was a person and artist who did everything, and did it well. “It was a full-time restlessness”, characterizes Marcelo Corsetti. In the midst of recording albums, he composed new songs, leaving the studio with material for two or three more complete albums. In photography, he left the focus of the lens and launched around ten authorial exhibitions in five years. Across this dimension, it takes more than a dozen throats to echo your voice.
Generations meet on stage, joining traditional names to those that have emerged recently, giving continuity to gaúcho music. Partnerships, influencers and influencers will join voices to sing the greatest hits of Bebeto’s vast work. “All these people are playing for free. For the homage and for helping Associação Peito Aberto, and all of that is very important for the three of us. Seeing how much affection everyone has for him”, comments Corsetti. Behind the scenes, everyone who participated during the band’s two decades will be present, from roadies to lighting and sound technicians. “It’s a super moment for us. It won’t be easy — but it’s necessary. All tributes are fair and necessary, because as long as there’s someone who remembers him, he’s not dead”, he adds.
The journey is revealing even for those who have followed in his footsteps for decades. “The look is different now, right?”, says Reinheimer. “There are songs that we found difficult to play, the structure he made sometimes wasn’t a perfect square. It’s because he had a lot to say, so sometimes it all didn’t fit in a verse of poetry. He was verbose. all.”
The verses, melodies and arrangements will be, for the last time – or once more, perhaps it’s fairer to say. After all, Bebeto Alves will always be a reference, he will always be ingrained in the sound that comes out of any instrument in Rio Grande do Sul, such is his greatness and influence. In music and art, his and others’, he lives forever.
