In July, the value of the basic food basket fell in 13 of the 17 Brazilian capitals that participate in the National Survey of the Basic Food Basket, released monthly by the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese).
The most important drops in the cost of the basket occurred in Recife (-4.58%), Campo Grande (-4.37%), João Pessoa (-3.90%) and Aracaju (-3.51%). . The only capital to present an increase was Porto Alegre, with an increase of 0.47%. In Salvador (0.03%), Brasília (0.04%) and Fortaleza (0.05%) relative stability was observed.
Porto Alegre was also the capital where basic foodstuffs had the highest cost, with an average of R$ 777.16. In the North and Northeast, where the composition of the basket is different, the lowest average values were registered in Aracaju (R$ 547.22), João Pessoa (R$ 581.31), Recife (R$ 592.71) and in Salvador (R$ 596.04).
Based on the value of the most expensive basket, which in July was in Porto Alegre, Dieese calculated what would be the ideal minimum wage in the country to cover expenses with food, housing, health, education, clothing, hygiene, transportation, leisure and pension. According to the entity, the minimum wage should have been R$6,528.93 or 4.95 times the current minimum wage (R$1,320).
