Barbecue at Alvorada: musical straw, Dino jokes and the promise of a more present Lula

The barbecue promoted by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Friday night (27th), which brought together a few ministers, leaders in Congress, close friends and ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), was relaxed and had few business conversations. For part of the guests, heard by the blog, the meeting was seen as a return of the president to the articulation of the government. According to reports, Lula circulated around to talk to everyone present and stated more than once that he would return to informal meetings at Alvorada. He even remembered the football matches he promoted at Granja do Torto in his first term. It was clear, according to those present at the barbecue, that the president wants to be more part of the team and be more present in the daily life of Brasília. In the first five months of his administration, Lula devoted much of his time to international travel and other agendas within Brazil. This week, when the government suffered the setback in Congress in the Provisional Measure that restructures the government, Lula heard from congressmen that he needs to be more present in the day to day of politics with allies. The invitation was made at the last minute by the president’s advisors and by the first lady, which is why many of the ministers were away from Brasília. About 20 people participated in the barbecue, which had the meat brought by the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, a musical straw by Margareth Menezes (Culture) and many jokes told by the Minister of Justice, Flavio Dino. Little was said about work at the long table set up in the leisure area of the Palácio da Alvorada. From outside the government, there were STF ministers Gilmar Mendes and Alexandre de Moraes, in addition to the recently retired Ricardo Lewandowski, very close to Lula. In addition to the palatial nucleus of ministers — Rui Costa, Alexandre Padilha and Paulo Pimenta —, there were Alexandre Silveira (Mines and Energy), Luiz Marinho (Labour), Dino and Aniele Franco (Racial Equality). The three government leaders in the House and Senate also attended.
