About a month ago, the owner of the property occupied by the bar Balcão, at number 150 Rua Dr. Melo Alves, in Jardins, got in touch with Francisco Millan, Chico, to let him know about the possibility of selling the space to the developer Paladin.
Weeks later and with the purchase “practically closed”, according to the owner of the establishment, the moment is of uncertainty about the future of the business opened in 1994 in that same spot, on the corner of Alameda Tietê. With its huge counter that occupies the entire hall and is surrounded by high stools, the bar has become a meeting point for writers, journalists and visual artists.
Chico says he has maintained a friendly conversation with the developer and that the company has shown interest in the bar remaining. “Although we are on opposite sides of the border, we are not yet at war,” he explains.
The owner, however, says he is only interested in staying if the bar remains open exactly as it is — and that this is still an option. “In this branch, the walls breathe, they have a lot of history. If you change everything, dedetize and leave everything brand new, it becomes another place. And if that is impossible, the idea is to resist”, says Chico.
One of the ideas, according to him, was raised by a client who suggested that the space be listed. “Then we will look for all fronts to defend ourselves, but for the time being we haven’t reached this point”, he says.
If it closes its doors to make room for the construction of buildings, the bar will join an ever-increasing list of spaces affected by the verticalization of the city, such as Mercearia São Pedro, hamburger shop Oregon, Teatro-D, bar Caracol and the properties on one side of Rua Edson Dias, in Pinheiros, where bars such as Azulzinho and Kingston are located — the latter closed its doors for good, while the other merged with Meretriz, by the same owner and on the other side of the street.
Another case that gained repercussions was that of the Espaço Itaú de Cinema annex on Rua Augusta, which closed its doors in February.
