Assaí takes a cautious stance on new store openings – 05/05/2023 – Market

Assaí is seeing a competitive environment in national retail due to the large opening of stores by the sector, and by the company itself, in recent months and a consumer with income pressured by the scenario of high interest rates, said the company’s executive president, Belmiro Gomes, this Friday (5).
As a result, the company adopted a “more cautious” posture in opening new organic stores, said the executive, citing that the company has 40 projects for new stores awaiting approval.
“The objective for Assaí in 2023 is stability of margins and leverage of 2.2 times”, said Gomes, citing that it is still too early to revise the revenue target of 100 billion reais in 2024.
In 2021, Assaí Atacadista bought the hypermarkets of the extinct Extra Hiper banner, from GPA (Grupo Pão de Açúcar), and started converting the commercial points last year. Of the 60 stores opened by the chain in 2022, 24 are in São Paulo, ten of which are in the capital. In a Datafolha survey, the company was considered the best wholesaler for the eighth consecutive time.
