Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, presented this Tuesday (11) its own model of AI (artificial intelligence) generative, technology similar to ChatGPT, which should be integrated into all the company’s applications in the near future.

In a taped demonstration, the language model named Tongyi Qianwen — which means “truth of a thousand questions” — drafted invitation letters, planned travel itineraries and advised shoppers on the types of makeup they could purchase.

Tongyi Qianwen will initially be integrated into DingTalk, Alibaba’s corporate messaging app, and can be used to summarize meeting minutes, compose emails and draft business proposals, as well as be added to the Tmall Genie voice assistant.

According to the chief executive of Alibaba, Daniel Zhang, the technology will bring great changes in the way “we produce, work and live our lives”.

The Chinese giant’s cloud computing unit plans to open up the Tongyi Qianwen to customers so they can build their own custom models.

The launch, which came on the heels of SenseTime’s announcement of a raft of new AI products this week, was quickly followed by the Chinese regime’s publication of proposed rules on how AI services should be managed.

The idea of ​​the project, released this Tuesday, is to regulate generative artificial intelligence. Before going on sale, products using the technology will have to undergo a “safety inspection”, according to the Cyberspace Administration of China.

The regulatory agency, which opens the text for public consultation before approval, does not say when the standard will come into force.

According to the project, content generated by AI must “reflect fundamental socialist values ​​and must not contain content related to the subversion of state power”. Furthermore, they must not contain “terrorist or extremist propaganda”, “ethnic hatred” or “other content that may disturb the economic and social order”.

The aim would be to ensure the “healthy development and standardized application of generative artificial intelligence technology”, adds the agency.

ChatGPT worries China

Beijing is attentive to advances made by the American ChatGPT chatbot, launched in November and capable of formulating detailed answers in a few seconds to any type of question.

The system is not available in the country, but ChatGPT is the subject of several articles and debates on social networks, while Chinese technology giants compete to develop equivalent tools.

Baidu, known for its search engine, was one of the first Chinese companies to establish a presence in AI, followed by Tencent (internet and gaming) and Alibaba.

The Ernie Bot, introduced by Baidu last month, works in Mandarin and is aimed exclusively at the Chinese market. It is currently only available in beta version.

China aspires to take the lead in the artificial intelligence sector by 2030, which means revolutionizing various sectors such as the automobile industry and medicine.

The main challenge for Chinese developers in the race for artificial intelligence is to create a conversational robot that works well but doesn’t go beyond the allowed content.

China closely monitors the internet and the media, imposing restrictions on content that criticizes state policy. Social networks also face severe scrutiny.

At the forefront of regulating new technologies, Beijing last year asked internet giants to reveal their algorithms, the brains of many apps and services on the internet and often a closely guarded secret.
