Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) released the use of more than 930 types of ointments for styling hair. Use had been suspended since February to investigate adverse effects, such as temporary blindness.
These products are used to create hairstyles, braids and the so-called baby hair. They are often used on curly and curly hair to bring definition, but can be applied to any type of hair. Access the name of the ointments released here.
The regulatory agency maintained the precautionary prohibition for products that have high concentrations of Ceteareth-20, responsible for serious ocular adverse effects. This type of substance is used to mix liquids that do not mix.
The released products are those that have a concentration of less than 20% of the ingredient in their composition, which have not had reports of serious adverse events and whose regularization processes have not been canceled by the agency.
In February, Anvisa prohibited the commercialization of all ointments used to model and braid hair.
The agency’s decision was taken after recent cases of temporary blindness, severe burning in the eyes, intense tearing, itching, redness, swelling in the eyes and headache linked to the use of ointments.
According to available information, the events occurred mainly with people who took baths in the sea and pool or even in the rain after using the products.
Anvisa said that investigations continue, with laboratory analysis of the products, evaluation of manufacturing processes, inspection of manufacturers, adoption of specific regulatory measures, meetings with specialists, interaction with international health authorities and follow-up of notifications of adverse events related to ointments.
