‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ makes an average presentation of a great villain; g1 already seen

Jonathan Majors saves the slow pace and generic story with a powerful performance as the new great antagonist of the Marvel Universe. The film premieres this Thursday (16). Big theatrical releases can often suffer because of the very anticipation they create. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, the hero’s third film and the 31st in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is the most recent victim. Responsible for opening a new phase of the studio’s integrated stories, the adventure suffers from an unstable pace and generic story in which the risks never seem to be the greatest. In the end, the true hero of this Thursday’s (16th) big premiere in Brazilian theaters is the villain. With a powerful performance in his first (sort of) appearance as Kang, arguably the biggest antagonist of the MCU’s years to come, Jonathan Majors (“Lovecraft country”) makes the movie worthwhile. Unfortunately, his presence looms so much over the rest that the film fails to pass from a luxury presentation of the character – when it could have been much more than an episode of “Star Wars” made by Marvel. Watch ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Movie Trailer Something Rotten in the Quantum Realm “Quantumania” takes Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), the gang (Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer) and their daughter ( Kathryn Newton) to the famous Quantum Realm, a kind of universe contained at the sub-atomic level of the MCU. With no one to bring them back, they must seek out former allies and join forces not only to return to their normal sizes, but also to prevent the conqueror of this entire microverse from escaping – and becoming a threat to this and other realities. For the first half, the film rolls over with a lack of urgency that makes it hard for the audience to stay interested. The Quantum Realm created by director Peyton Reed – who directs his third film of the hero – is beautiful, for sure, but it is not interesting enough to sustain a plot without real or immediate threats. The effort is obviously in vain, as Kang is such a surprise that he not only illustrates all the posters, but has already appeared – in a version of a parallel universe – even in the “Loki” series. With the threat only in the background for most of the film, it is very difficult to understand exactly what risk the heroes are exposed to. And the microverse is such a beautiful but so alien scene that it actually removes an identification with its inhabitants. Majors’ performance itself is powerful enough to almost single-handedly justify the danger posed by the villain. Unfortunately, it lacked showing more the strength of the character than just being in the gogó. The featured Kang talks a lot, and has plenty of enemies and henchmen who speak for him, but it’s hard to understand exactly why he’s such a threat to the multiverse. In the end, it’s still pretty hard to swallow some of the script’s uninspired resolutions. “Deus ex machina” is an ancient Greek theater term arising from moments when a deity would appear out of nowhere to tie up loose ends. “Quantumania” invokes its own “Deus ‘ants’ machina” – something that would be ironic if it weren’t lazy. The third “Ant-Man” strays a bit from the very heightened level that fans have come to expect from the MCU. After a series of middling quality movies, it’s possible to question whether this status is valid, but it’s still undeniable.
