Americanas CPI: Deputy withdraws requests from banks – 05/30/2023 – Market

Federal deputy Júnior Mano (PL-CE) presented and withdrew, moments before the vote, 16 requests to take to the CPI of Americanas presidents of several national and foreign banks that would be creditors of the company.

The argument presented by the deputy —who is the 1st vice president of the CPI— in the invitation requests withdrawn this Tuesday (30) was the need for clarification on the values ​​referring to each institution, loan conditions and “whether there was any type of audit or accounting analysis to verify accounting inconsistencies” at Americanas.

Among the presidents of banks subject to Mano’s requests were the main ones in Brazil (Bradesco, Itaú, Santander, Banco do Brasil and Caixa), in addition to Deutsche Bank (Germany) and JP Morgan (United States).

The president of the BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development), Aloizio Mercadante, was also one of the guests, but the bank sent a note to the CPI saying that it is no longer on the network’s list of creditors.

In a note, Júnior Mano stated that he withdrew the requests as he considered that the moment is more appropriate for the approval of the invitation request only from representatives of some of the banks.

“We believe that the moment is right to concentrate efforts on more relevant information about the company’s financial situation and relations with banks, such as confidential documents and e-mail exchanges between financial institutions and the Americanas Group, in addition to seeking information about financing conditions”, he added.

Among the requests approved this Tuesday by the CPI is one of the deputies Domingos Neto (PSD-CE) and Diego Coronel (PSD-BA) so that representatives of Bradesco, BTG Pactual, Itaú, Santander, Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas, Banco do Brasil, Banco Safra and Caixa Econômica Federal clarify “the real situation of the company’s liabilities”.

In this Tuesday’s session, some parliamentarians made inflammatory speeches claiming that there was no “shielding” to anyone by the CPI.

João Carlos Bacelar (PL-BA), for example, claimed to have been approached by five journalists who would have questioned him about possible pressure to have shielding in the commission.

The CPI that analyzes the Americanas accounting scandal was installed on May 17. The company’s judicial reorganization was approved in January this year after the company revealed that it found inconsistencies of more than R$ 20 billion in its balance sheet.

This Tuesday, the CPI also approved invitations to hear, among others, representatives of affected suppliers, the partners of PwC and KPMG, multinationals that audited the company’s balance sheet, and the president of the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM), João Pedro Birth.

The CPI’s idea is to listen to businessmen Jorge Paulo Lemann, Carlos Alberto Sicupira and Marcel Telles, Americanas’ reference shareholders, only in the final stage of the work.
