Amazônia: Short film from Amazonas is a finalist for Lab Narrativas Negras

Short film ‘To see the future’ was selected after 3 stages with more than 192 submissions from audiovisual creatives across the country

Audiovisual director and visual artist Keila Sankofa is among the 3 finalists of the Lab Narrativas Negras project and will go to Nigeria to participate in a film laboratory with activities linked to improving the selected project to create opportunities. The short film ‘To see the future’ was selected after 3 stages with more than 192 submissions from audiovisual creatives across the country.

The projects ‘Olho d’Água (BA)’ and ‘Nas Ondas do Rádio (PA)’ were also selected.

Lab Negras Narrativas is a space for meeting and improving narratives. This audiovisual laboratory is carried out by the Association of Black Audiovisual Professionals – APAN and is in partnership with Amazon Prime Video.

Within the Lab Narrativas Negras, meetings and workshops with script, direction and production consultants took place, as well as exchanges with other directors selected in stages 1 and 2. “There were many classes, consultancies, tips, the laboratory was undoubtedly a structure for organizing this short film project”highlights the artist.

Keila explains that the short is provisionally called “To see the future”, a 15-minute fiction that takes place in an untouchable time, which is between the pre-colonial past and a future where the black and indigenous population can take advantage of all its technologies and its specificities, cultural and social, multiple without the intervention of violence imposed since the European invasion.

“This is a short film about a black and indigenous Amazonian narrative, our team is made up of this diversity of people who are able and interested in building this great audiovisual work. We are currently seeking financial and structural support to make this short film in the most powerful way possible.”

Sarah Pimentel, Executive Producer, and Francisco Ricardo, art director, participated in the laboratory. But the team already has other names such as Cláudio Lavôr for sound production, Adanilo as cast preparer and Malu Dacio as communications coordinator.

The artist also remembers that Nigeria is one of the places in the world with the greatest audiovisual production in the world. This will be Keila’s first international trip.

“Nigeria is a country that produces a lot of audiovisual, it has a big market there, they are a powerhouse not only in the music industry, but in the cinema industry as well. This is my first international trip and it’s to Nigeria, a dream I’ve had for a few years, it’s a huge joy, an unbelievable opportunity. I thank nature, the orixás and all those who support the ideas I have been producing in recent years. I am a power, because I have many (from this and other worlds) to support the fables that tell about our victory”,
