Amazonas will receive investment of BRL 883 million for sustainability projects

The investment will also be applied to the Northeast. The works will benefit hydroelectric plants in both regions

Eletrobras announced yesterday (02) the contribution, in the total amount of R$ 883 million, for the implementation of sustainability projects in the region of the hydroelectric plants belonging to the companies Eletrobras, Chesf, Furnas and Eletronorte. The amount relates to the 2023 installment and results from the application of the Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA), since the date of signature of the contracts, June 17, 2022, to the total nominal amount of BRL 875 million.

The financial resources will be annual, for a period of ten years, of which R$ 350 million from Chesf, destined to the revitalization of hydrographic basins of the São Francisco and Parnaíba rivers; R$ 295 million from Eletronorte, to reduce the total cost of generation in the Legal Amazon; and R$ 230 million from Furnas, used in the areas of influence of the companies’ hydroelectric plants.

According to the president of Eletrobras, Wilson Ferreira Junior, the contributions made by the company mark the beginning of one of the largest environmental programs in the country, with investments of approximately R$ 880 million per year in projects to revitalize watersheds, with reforestation actions and preservation of springs, in addition to renewable energy generation projects in the Legal Amazon, with the replacement of currently existing thermal generation.

“In addition to the environmental benefits, the projects defined by the federal government and implemented by Eletrobras will be responsible for generating large jobs and improving the quality of life in the regions where they are implemented, especially in the North and Northeast”, said Ferreira Junior.

The project to be implemented from the fund set up for Eletronorte, pro-Amazônia Legal, also includes improving the navigability of the Madeira River and the Tocantins River, in addition to renewable energy generation programs and the interconnection of isolated systems, which structurally reduce the electricity generation costs borne by the Fuel Consumption Account.

The programs are coordinated by the federal government, through three management committees, with multi-ministerial participation and civil society sectors. It is up to Eletrobras to propose and implement the actions approved by the fund committee of each subsidiary. Projects to revitalize hydrographic basins are regulated by decree and involve actions that generate recharge of affluent flows and expand the operational flexibility of reservoirs, with the objective of preserving the priority and multiple use of water.
