Manaus (AM) – The consolidation of the Port of Chancay, in Peru, built by the Chinese company Cosco Shipping, will benefit the entire Amazon, according to the head of the State Secretariat, Science, Technology and Innovation (Sedecti), Serafim Corrêa, stated in an interview. The work, according to him, is about to become one of the main routes for commercial exchange between South America and China, as a two-way street.

“The grains that are leaving the North of Mato Grosso via Itacoatiara, instead of going down the Amazon River, can go up and out through the Pacific Ocean, and the gain in displacement will be greater, so this port in Peru that the Chinese are building will be the most important infrastructure project for the Amazon, although outside the Amazon, this will change our entire internal relationship and our logistics will be significantly improved as a result”,

Serafim explained that the port of Chancay will change logistics and that one of the most benefiting ports will be Amazonas. He says that Governor Wilson Lima is aware of the news, just as all governments in the Amazon are tuned in and cheering for this to happen as quickly as possible.

“Today, our corn exports were greater through the Amazon River waterway than through the port of Santos, considering what came out through the port of Itacoatiara, the port of Santarém and two other ports below Santarém, all of them highly profitable, because they save a lot of freight on exports, now imagine leaving through the Pacific Ocean, where it will be much bigger”,

Secretary Serafim also highlighted the delays that Brazil faced for many years in Science, Technology and Innovation, but that investments are now being made and that it is necessary for him to accelerate processes.

“100 years ago we lost the rubber battle due to a lack of science, technology and innovation. We cannot lose this battle again in the 21st century”,

He explained that a series of factors are decisive for Brazil, but mainly for the Amazon.

Serafim highlighted that the whole world has eyes on Brazil due to climate issues, but that new technologies are beginning to arrive and cited as an example, in Manaus, the batteries for electric cars and buses, which are being manufactured at the Manaus Industrial Complex .

“I think we should spread more of what is happening, we need to speed up this process more, because otherwise we are going to lose the competition to the Chinese in one way or another. You can put up customs barriers, high taxes, no problem, they produce so cheaply that they will be able to flood the world. What advantage do they and Korea have over us? It’s just that they invested in science, technology and innovation over decades,”
