Amazonas returns bariatric surgery in SUS patients

Manaus (AM) – The Adriano Jorge Hospital Foundation (FHAJ), with the State Department of Health (SES-AM), performed the first bariatric surgery this year on Monday (27). The procedure takes place three weeks after the announcement of the operation. The contract signed by the Government of Amazonas, on February 3, guarantees the performance of 48 bariatric surgeries for patients in the public health network throughout this year.

The procedure is performed in the treatment of morbid obesity, not being an aesthetic procedure. The Secretary of State for Health of Amazonas, Anoar Samad, points out that this surgery directly benefits the population that needs it most.

“(The procedure) was done by the SUS (Unified Health System) here. We have news that it was interrupted, I don’t know why, in 2013. Doctor Ayllon and his team came to the Secretariat. We spoke with Governor Wilson Lima and it was the Governor’s determination that these surgeries be returned as soon as possible. We managed to sign the contract”, reports the secretary.

Anoar Samad also points out that the guarantee of carrying out the procedure is “a very important milestone, especially for the population that needs it”.

“People who don’t have access to a health plan, people who don’t have access to the financial condition to pay for a surgery like that and suffer from the problems that obesity, especially morbid obesity, brings to health. In the Wilson Lima government, we promise, we deliver and we do”, he declared.

From the signature of the contract, the patients who are waiting for the surgery after judicial determination began to be assisted first and, then, the attendance flow will be defined by the FHAJ together with control agencies. The director of the unit, doctor Ayllon Menezes, points out that the surgery represents a significant improvement in the quality of life of people who need the procedure.

“The bariatric surgery patient was always being neglected, unfortunately, there are some gestures. Faced with this need, we were able to rescue the prioritization of this service and put it back into operation. With that, we were able to offer, through the surgery performed by Dr. Sidney Chalub’s team, to improve the quality of life of these patients”, he emphasized.

Patient Daysevanda Dantas celebrates the procedure with emotion. For her, it will be the beginning of a life change.

“When they returned to the surgeries, I was called to the outpatient clinic and managed to do the exams in time. I am very happy that, when I returned to the process, I was awarded the first surgery. I was very well received by the outpatient clinic here at Adriano Jorge. I was at home at night and I had a technician call me to inform me that they had managed to anticipate my exam”, she says.

Obesity

Manaus is the Brazilian capital with the highest rate of obese people, according to a survey released in 2019 by the Ministry of Health. The digestive tract surgeon and participant in the bariatric surgery service at FHAJ, Sidney Chalub, points out that the work is not limited to surgery alone, but that there is a multidisciplinary medical team involved in the process.

“It is not just bariatric surgery, but a bariatric surgery program in which we will have several professionals to help this patient not only in the preparation, but in the long-term follow-up. We are very happy because we are offering a quality program”.

Bariatric surgery is performed for the treatment of morbid obesity or severe obesity, and diseases associated with excess body fat. The procedure will be done by videolaparoscopy (by video), a modern, less invasive technique that ensures a faster recovery of the patient.

The provision of service will last for 12 (twelve) months, counting from the publication of the extract contained in the Official Gazette of the State of Amazonas (DOE).
