Manaus (AM) – By April this year, the Government of Amazonas, through the State Department of Health (SES), expects to perform 2,120 surgeries in the specialties of ophthalmology, proctology, gynecology and mastology on patients registered in the National Regulation System (SisReg). This weekend alone, around 500 ophthalmological cataract surgeries are being carried out at the Delphina Rinaldi Abdel Aziz Hospital, a unit linked to the SES.
In the first joint effort of 2024, held between February 23rd and 25th, 361 ophthalmological cataract surgeries were performed. Another 100 procedures were performed in February in the specialties of proctology, gynecology and mastology. On Friday (1), 115 cataract surgeries were performed, according to the hospital’s report. This Saturday (2), 72 procedures have already been carried out in the same specialty. This Sunday (3), the cataract surgery campaign continues, starting at 7am.
The Health Secretary of Amazonas, Anoar Samad, highlighted the State Government’s commitment to intensify surgeries at Delphina Aziz. “There will be more than 2 thousand surgeries until the first half of April. This weekend, we are carrying out a group of cataract surgeries. It is Health working increasingly to improve service to the population and reduce queues”, said the secretary.
Apart from the joint effort, Delphina Aziz carries out, on average, 1,300 surgeries in various specialties per month. “All this progress is only possible because of the union of several professional fronts and the determination of the State Government”, points out the North, West and Central-West operational director of the National Institute of Social and Human Development (INDSH), José Luiz Gasparini.
For Taynah Miranda Leão, physician-surgeon at Hospital Delphina Aziz, the greatest satisfaction is being part of making the dreams of patients waiting for these procedures come true. “It is a great opportunity to be part of these well-organized joint efforts, carried out with such safety, with dedication from the entire team. Seeing those people who were waiting for surgeries finally being able to undergo a procedure is gratifying”, said the doctor.
Technology
Cataract procedures performed at the unit rely on phacoemulsification technology with lens implants. Considered the best and safest medical procedure for the treatment of cataracts, phacoemulsification is recognized as being the most accurate and least invasive technique for the surgical treatment and cure of cataracts.
In this technique, the crystalline lens (natural lens of the eye) affected by the cataract is removed using an ultrasound device, dismantling its contents and at the same time aspirating it. Soon after, the intraocular lens is implanted in the appropriate location to replace the lens that was just removed.
The procedure is performed with a phacoemulsifier pen and microinstruments, which manipulate the cataract inside the eye with millimetric cuts. It is a technique that in many cases does not require sutures for closure. Recovery is quick, the patient returns home shortly after the procedure.
Another group of surgical procedures are scheduled to take place in the unit until April, in the specialties of proctology, gynecology and mastology.
