The Amazon Impact is an unprecedented initiative of the UN Global Compact in Brazil to engage the business sector in favor of the region

Manaus (AM) – Manaus will host the first action in Brazil of the Amazon Impact Movement. The UN Global Compact initiative was launched during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, held in September, and represents a commitment by companies and organizations to keep the forest standing and combat deforestation.

The kickoff for the Movement in the country will take place on October 4th, with an event at the headquarters of the Águas de Manaus concessionaire, on Avenida André Araújo, in the Aleixo neighborhood, in Manaus.

On the occasion, panels will be held focusing on basic sanitation and water security agendas. Representatives from the UN, Government of Amazonas, Manaus City Hall, Unicef, Águas de Manaus, Eletrobrás, IDB Invest, Coca-Cola and other organizations operating throughout the country will participate in the conversation circles, which take place from 8:30 am to 12:25 pm.

“The Amazon Impact is an unprecedented initiative of the UN Global Compact in Brazil to engage the business sector in favor of the region. The Amazon is the world’s water reservoir, holds 65% of Brazil’s groundwater, and is our climate regulator. The Movement is transversal, it is an initiative that we want to show to the public of Manaus that we are attentive and active in protecting the forest”,

explains Camila Valverde, Impact Director and COO of the UN Global Compact in Brazil.

Through the engagement of the public and private sectors, the Movimento Impacto Amazônia will develop several specific actions of the Movement and others based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To this end, action plans, measures, support for bioeconomy projects in Amazon communities and the strengthening of indigenous peoples will be put into practice.

Impacto Amazônia will have a strategy of engagement and development of actions with companies that includes two key pillars: combating deforestation and keeping the forest standing.

Companies that join the Movement are committed to, by 2030, implementing initiatives and projects that ensure that the company’s operations and value chain do not contribute to deforestation and promote actions to keep the forest standing. Impacto Amazônia is the first UN Global Compact Movement in Brazil to focus on a region.

“Our daily work with basic sanitation involves preserving the environment. Thinking about the standing forest and clean streams is necessary so that we can have a better quality of life, better health rates, and more tourism opportunities. Everything is connected, and, therefore, we are grateful for the Global Compact’s trust in bringing this historic event to Manaus, a city that is at the center of a biome that needs to be preserved”,

highlights the CEO of Águas de Manaus, Diego Dal Magro.
