Amazon and Shopee ask to join the program that grants exemption on purchases up to US$50

The Federal Revenue reported this Friday (15) that the companies Amazon and Shopee formalized their requests to join the Remessa Compliance program. The body stated that the requests will be analyzed and still need to be published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU). By joining the program, online purchases of up to US$50, including shipping costs, from these companies will be exempt from Import Tax.
Purchases over US$50 will incur a total tax equivalent to 92% of the value of the product plus shipping. The 92% taxes result from the application of federal import tax and ICMS. In addition to being applied in a cascade, the state tax is equivalent, in practice, to an increase of 20.48% as it is calculated “inside”. This means that the tax rate is applied on a base that already includes the tax itself.
Shoppe’s request comes after the federal government assessed the possibility of denouncing the company on suspicion of tax evasion and money laundering. Documents from the Federal Revenue Service indicated that Shoppe had not adhered to the government’s taxation program due to alleged illegal practices, Valor Econômico reported this Wednesday (14).
Now, with the entry of Amazon and Shoppe, the Federal Revenue calculates that companies certified in the program will represent 78.5% of the volume of shipments sent to the country from January to July 2023. In addition to the two new membership applications, Shein, AliExpress and Sinerlog e-commerce are also part of the program.
