Airbus announced its new project of airplanes with a transparent roof during the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX), considered the biggest fair of airplane seats and interiors in the world. The event was held between June 6th and 8th, in Hamburg, Germany.
The project gives the name “Airspace” to the new cabins, which will be integrated into the company’s A220 aircraft family. In all, ten airlines and eight technology companies contributed to the project.
Called “Airspace Cabin Vision 2035+”, the company’s planning aims, in addition to aesthetics, to environmental issues. According to Airbus, the new cabin could reduce between 10% and 20% the overall environmental impact of the aircraft during its life cycle.
Another factor to be impacted is the weight of the cabins, which should decrease by up to 40%. The company intends to invest in technologies ranging from 3D printing to the use of bio-based materials and recycled polymers. The materials to be used will be easier to be recycled and reused, according to the company.
By 2025, Airbus aims to provide more transparency on the real impact of parts and operations and offer low-carbon options. By 2030, the goal will be to introduce new and more sustainable designs.
Finally, in 2035, the company aims to finalize the projects so that the cabin materials are based on a circular economy. There are plans to integrate the cabins into hydrogen-powered aircraft that are already under development.
The A220 planes will still receive other improvements. A redesigned and improved passenger service unit will be implemented, in addition to greater storage capacity. It will be possible to take about 19 more bags on the A220-330.
