The Voa Brasil Program, which aims to facilitate access to airline tickets in the country for certain audiences, should come into effect from August and may have a limit on tickets per passenger per year, according to the Minister of Ports and Airports, Márcio França.
Passengers who have not flown in the previous 12 months will have priority in the program, which is focused on air re-entry. The value of each ticket would be up to R$ 200 and flights must be available at off-peak times, during the low season.
“It’s an idea to encourage aviation and allow those who don’t fly to fly,” said the minister at a committee hearing in the Senate.
The program’s target audience includes retirees, pensioners and students.
França added that the three main Brazilian airlines are already in agreement with the program and the government is now negotiating with the terminals granted to the private sector the possibility of a cashback program for the boarding fee.
“They are proposing a payback; that is, they would return an amount (of the boarding fee) for each person who boarded and consumed at the airport itself or paid for a taxi to return home”, said the minister.
The government’s project aims to bring back to Brazilian airports thousands of Brazilians who stopped flying because of the high fares, he said.
The arrival of low-cost companies in the domestic market soon may help with passenger access and lower ticket prices, according to the minister.
“With the arrival of low cost companies in Brazil, at least one has already given certainty and the second should come to Brazil, we will then have a healthy dispute of companies that make cheaper flights in simpler conditions”, he said.
