AI of former Google employees hits more than ChatGPT – 06/22/2023 – Tech

Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Inflection announced this Thursday (22) its own language model used in the chatbot Pi, a competitor that comes out ahead of the free version of ChatGPT.

With the announcement, Inflection starts selling access to the model, called Inflection-1, to companies and developers, as does OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT. Access to the Pi remains free and can be done via the web, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.

The startup founded by two former employees of Google’s AI arm has 35 people and says it is working on the report of a new model with similar computational capacity at the level of GPT-4.

“This was possible with a lean team, because we had funding to have the most Nvidia chips among AI startups,” Inflection Chief Executive Mustafa Suleyman said at a Bloomberg tech event on Thursday.

Inflection is funded by the Greylock venture fund, led by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Former Google DeepMind Chief Scientist Karén Simonyan is behind the technical side of the startup.

Inflection’s own tests put Inflection-1 ahead of Facebook’s LLaMA language models and PaLM-540B, equipped on Google’s Bard until May 10th. Google’s chatbot is now equipped with the more agile PaLM2, but it is not available in Brazil or Europe.

At the event, Suleyman also skewered the search giant’s ad model. “No one wants to have an AI funded by advertisers interested in data in their pocket. Their artificial intelligence needs to be reliable.”

Google collects during conversations with Bard, in addition to messages, geolocation data, IP address and checks whether the user is at home, at work or elsewhere. Advertising platforms use this information to tailor advertisements.

Inflection’s motto is to deliver personalized artificial intelligence to the public. Unlike the creator of ChatGPT, OpenAI, Suleyman’s startup says its platform is an AI focused on conversations and has no pretensions to be able to respond on any subject.

Also at the Bloomberg event, the chief executive of smartphone chip developer Qualcomm, Cristiano Amon, said he works with Microsoft, Google and Samsung to bring the great language models to cell phones. This would open up new possibilities for apps, according to him.

The chief executive of OpenAI, Sam Altman, also attended the event and said that startups need space to innovate without being constrained by regulations. For him, smaller businesses need loopholes to remain competitive against the giants of the technology industry.

Altman reiterated his position in favor of global governance to control risks in AI development. “I know this isn’t easy, but it’s urgent.”

The OpenAI executive recognized that artificial intelligence poses threats against humanity, but claims that AI can also solve the problem of food shortages on the planet. “Would you stop technology with the potential to end hunger?”
