After mad cow, Russia removes meat restriction from Brazil – 07/04/2023 – Market

Russia announced this Friday (7) the end of restrictions on imports of Brazilian beef due to an isolated and atypical case of the “mad cow disease” disease that occurred in Marabá (PA), the federal government said in a statement.
The folder highlighted that the announcement, which adds to the recent reopening of other markets, such as the Philippines on March 28, represents the full normalization of trade in the product with Russia.
The government explained that, unlike the classic form of the disease —called Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)—, the atypical form occurs naturally and spontaneously in the cattle herd, does not represent a risk to public health and does not justify import restrictions, according to the guidelines of the WHOA (World Organization for Animal Health).
Due to the case, Russia had suspended, on March 1, the import of beef from animals over 30 months old from Pará.
In 2022, beef exports to Russia totaled around US$ 165 million, equivalent to 24 thousand tons of the product, according to government data. The Philippines are the sixth destination for beef exports from Brazil, totaling US$ 275 million in 2022 (61 thousand tons).
