Acupuncture in animals: ancient Chinese technique can bring immediate relief to pain A bull that escaped slaughter, a horse that kicked in pain, but calmed down after the first needle. These are just a few of the benefits that veterinarians have seen using acupuncture to treat health problems in large animals. Therapy, which emerged 5,000 years ago, is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that began to be used first on humans and then on animals. In Brazilian veterinary medicine, it started to be adopted in the 1980s. In acupuncture, needles are placed in the animal’s body at specific points, which are interconnected by meridians or energy lines. Their placement stimulates the nervous system and the release of hormones. In the field, the technique has brought good results in the treatment of injuries in large animals, such as horses and bulls (see the examples in the video above). Some results are immediate, but others can take months, depending on the severity. Those who are from the area point out that the technique is not miraculous and that it has been used alongside traditional medicine. The Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of Paraná, for example, even created a postgraduate course in the area, where, for example, the effects of the technique on the reproduction of mares are being studied.
