About the Yanomami tragedy that we all see, Regina Duarte could at least remain silent

The one who was once considered one of the greatest actresses in the country, Namoradinha do Brasil, Viúva Porcina, Rainha da Sucata, Helena de Manoel Carlos and many other women we admired, made a disgusting post referring to the Yanomami children found in their territories in an alarming situation of misery. A lot of people just believe what they see. Regina Duarte, who has been giving successive samples of insensitivity for some time, not even that. She may have her political preferences and opinions there, however questionable they may be. But, against terribly sad images of malnourished indigenous children, there is no room for relativization. “Helpless childhood… People raised on cassava, beans, vegetables and fish”, she wrote in a post that was detonated by critics and later deleted. “They would have come from Venezuela,” she said in another shameless publication. Even if that were the case, so what, pale face? Would it be minimally acceptable?

How far can someone’s coldness reach? Graziela wondered this on a sunny Sunday in the middle of Rio de Janeiro. The Marvelous City is full of ugly things, which soap operas and cinema do not show. It was close to Avenida Atlântica, bathed by the sea, on the parallel and noisy Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, that she noticed a guy sitting down staring at the ground. Grazi entered the market thinking about him: “He must be hungry. You must be suffering. Does he have a family?”, she was talking to her own thoughts. As it was all supposition, when leaving the establishment she passed by the boy again and said: “Are you hungry? What is your name? We go to the cafeteria and you order something to eat”. The answers came: “My name is Dario, I’m from Mexico, I’ve been in Rio for six months living on the street, looking for a job here and there”. His desolate look persisted. The order was a hot mix with a very cold orange juice, followed by a spontaneous thank you that the girl did not expect, a kiss and a hug. Embarrassed, Grazi wished luck and left, half sad, half satisfied. The sadness was knowing that her action was not going to change the world, there are thousands of Darios with different backgrounds and stories spread across the Brazilian streets hungry for everything right now. But she was aware that her act made him not feel invisible at least at that moment. He felt human. This man needs to be given many other conditions so that he can live with dignity, but who knows, maybe this meeting of the two doesn’t boost him in some way? Grazi had the opportunity to do that at least. And she did.

I don’t know in which region of Brazil you live and in which context you live, but, to a greater or lesser extent, poverty is present everywhere. In big cities, we literally stumble upon it, but we can’t go over it without doing absolutely nothing, even if we can’t solve everything. It is common for the wounds that are closer to our backyard to touch us more deeply. But if we look at a reality like that of the indigenous people in Roraima and, because it seems to be far from us, we think that we have nothing to do with it, we need to ask ourselves where our humanity ended up.

Some people allow themselves to be swallowed up by such extreme selfishness that they even question what they see, like the images made by Sônia Bridi and Paulo Zero in their reports — and shown by many other competent professionals. “There are young people kidnapped by miners”, “There are girls raped”, “There are reports of children releasing worms through their mouths”, Sônia reported in numerous interviews she gave. And here comes a Regina Duarte making unreasonable considerations? What kind of human being is she?

This lady is perhaps trapped in the wonderful fictional Leblon by Maneco that she once inhabited. Or the upscale neighborhood where she lives in São Paulo, which I don’t know and I have no interest in knowing. At least it relieves that, although there is a Regina, there is a Sônia Bridi, showing the world why serious journalism is important and increasingly necessary. All of us, regardless of where we are and where we come from, have everything to do with this tragedy, yes. You cannot solve big social problems with small actions. But if not that, what do you at least do? Think, at least.
