The border between Brazil and French Guiana, established by the Oiapoque River, may see an increase in regular visits by Brazilians to French territory and vice versa. More than a decade after it was completed, the enormous structure still carries the reputation of connecting nothing to nowhere, something that authorities both there and here plan to change.
During the 6th Meeting of the Oiapoque River Council, representatives of the Government of Amapá and French Guiana discussed cooperation proposals for various sectors, including the environment. Among the agreements is the construction of a sustainable recycling plan with the collection and treatment of solid waste.
At the event, the agreement that continues the Bio-Plateux project was also signed. The second phase envisages the implementation of an operational observatory for the management of water resources on the Oiapoque and Maroni rivers, which separate French Guiana, respectively, from Brazil and Suriname.
On the occasion, the State Secretariat for the Environment (Sema) presented the main environmental education and communication initiatives to be carried out in the region. Information was also shared about the State Water Resources Plan and the diagnosis of Amapá’s water resources, with an emphasis on the Oiapoque River basin.
Coexistence – In addition to environmental demands, suggestions for health and the economy were debated with civil society, which will be submitted for evaluation by the Brazilian and French governments in 2024, at the 13th Meeting of the Mixed Commission for Cross-border Cooperation (CMT), which will be held in Macapá. Approximately 32 thousand people live on the border between Amapá and French Guiana, with the majority, around 26.6 thousand inhabitants, residing in Oiapoque, in the extreme north of the state, and around 3 thousand in Saint Georges.
