This year’s ranking of the best restaurants in Latin America according to 50 Best, one of the main awards in world gastronomy, was released this Tuesday (28), in Rio de Janeiro. It is the first time that the awards ceremony has taken place in Brazil, which will also host the 2024 edition.
The Latin American selection is a regional version of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and has existed since 2013. This edition was marked by the protagonism of Mexicans and Peruvians and the departure of Brazilians from the main list. This time, eight national restaurants, most of them from São Paulo, were ranked.
Casa do Porco maintained its leading role and remained in 4th position, being considered the best in the country. Janaina Rueda, who runs the location together with Jefferson Rueda, was also chosen as the best chef in Latin America at the awards. The São Paulo restaurant occupies 12th place in the global ranking.
This year’s champion was Maido, from Peru. Since 2019, a new rule has been adopted, and restaurants that reach the top of the global ranking are automatically transferred to the Best of the Best category and can no longer compete for first place, including the regional one.
To reach the winners, a team of 300 voters, made up of gastronomy professionals, such as chefs and restaurant owners, journalists, critics and foodies, choose ten establishments in order of preference that they have visited. Four of them must be from outside the area the jurors represent, and they need to confirm visit dates. There are the same number of women and men voting and, each year, 25% of the team is renewed.
Brazil also has nine other restaurants between positions 51 and 100, in an extended list of the 50 Best, released last week. They are the São Paulo-based Charco (56), Fame Osteria (57), Mocotó (63), Kotori (64), DOM (65) —which fell 32 positions—, the Bahian Origem (76), the Rio de Janeiro-based Ristorante Hotel Cipriani (95 ) and Ocyá (96), and Kan Suke (97).

The Pig House (4th)
In São Paulo, the restaurant by chefs Janaína and Jefferson Rueda specializes in pork. The pigs, grown on the duo’s own farm, are used from tail to snout in the recipes. The current tasting menu costs R$290 and has eight stages, with items such as barbecue made with free-range pork and served with smoked glaze and peach palm salad, pork tartare with radish and pork ossobuco with onion soup. There is also an à la carte service. The house is in 12th position in the 50 Best global ranking.

Lasai (14th)
The Rio location features a tasting menu filled with seasonal national ingredients, designed by chef Rafael Costa e Silva. The meal costs R$1,150 and is served to just ten people, seated at the table next to the chef himself. Products from the garden and organic markets make up the recipes. Reservation is required. The restaurant rose six positions in the ranking.

Metzi (18th)
It delivers traditional Mexican cuisine with Brazilian ingredients, made by chefs Eduardo Ortiz, born in Mexico, and Luana Sabino, from São Paulo. The menu changes weekly and offers à la carte options and a closed meal, with seven stages, for R$355. Dishes such as yellow mole served with mussels, made with palm oil and coconut milk, may appear. The house, opened in São Paulo in 2020, debuted on the 50 Best last year and rose nine places.

Oteque (20th)
In Rio de Janeiro, the restaurant is run by chef Alberto Landgraf and highlights vegetables and seafood. The tasting menu, assembled according to the seasonality of the ingredients, this season features dishes such as marinated scallop with fish and pine nut mayonnaise, grilled octopus and oyster with chestnut milk and green apple pickles. The meal costs R$845 and there is no à la carte service.

Nelita (21st)
Chef Tássia Magalhães presents signature Italian cuisine at the address, which has featured in rankings of the best in the world since it opened its doors two years ago. With 11 stages, the tasting menu costs R$440 and is only available at dinner. There is also an à la carte menu. Among the recipes are spaghetti with squid and bottarga, green fusilli with broccoli and porcini and risotto with onion and Cuesta Azul cheese. The restaurant jumped 18 positions.

Evvai (22nd)
The São Paulo restaurant features signature cuisine by chef Luiz Filipe Souza. Priced at R$737, the 13-course tasting menu is Italian-inspired and uses Brazilian products. It features recipes such as prawn shrimp with chayote, tortellini with wood-fired duck with tucupi and ribs with pumpkin. The place does not have à la carte service.

Maní (34th)
The 12-course tasting menu, for R$620, features recipes such as vatapá with cavaquinha, chicken and green papaya and roe reconstructed with corn, pancetta and katsuobushi, dehydrated tuna flakes. The address also has à la carte dishes and a commercial menu (from R$79), served at lunch during the week.

Manu (35th)
Climbing 11 positions, the restaurant in Curitiba is run by Manu Buffara, elected the best chef in Latin America by 50 Best last year. The house only works with a tasting menu, based on the seasonality of the products and inspired by Manu’s story. The chef also won a sustainability award at 50 Best.
